Can you imagine China and India unified? How about China, India, the United States and the European Union?
The infrastructural expenditure alone would be unimaginable. To put it into perspective, China alone has spent trillions on its infrastructure and it’s not yet done.
Ideas of continental unification have always been a pipe…no, bong dream. The first focus should be internal unification, then market alignment, then regional integration. Then and only when all those steps are successful should the idea of continental unification be mooted. There is a limit to leapfrogging.
The upper-limit is of course Hard Power. Here is a dirty secret, “diversity” is utterly irrelevant to a country’s unification. The only thing that matters is a military under a unified chain of command committed to maintaining its country’s borders. The USA, India and China are all ethnically diverse, doesn’t matter. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh used to be a single country because there was an army capable of keeping it together. An African army would be millions strong with a budget approaching the continent’s entire current GDP.
That and it would need to be conquered first, so, unless there’s a budding Stalin/Mao/ Zhu de/Genghis Khan/Bobby Clive hiding in the wings, the United States of Africa will stay a bong dream making for good copy but bad reality.
